Clicker Games

A clicker game hands you a single verb — click — and then spends the next few hours making that verb mean something else. First you click for a point. Then you buy something that clicks for you. Then you realise you have not clicked in twenty minutes and you are still winning.
That inversion is the hook. The good ones are really about feedback loops: numbers that grow faster than you expect, upgrades that change what the number even is, and a pace that keeps nudging you toward "just one more milestone."
What makes a clicker worth your time
Look for three things: a second resource that appears around the ten-minute mark, upgrades that alter the loop rather than just scaling it, and a reason to walk away and come back. If a game only ever asks you to click harder, it is a waiting room. If it starts asking you to choose, it is a game.
A quick history of the single button
The genre traces back to idle experiments in the mid-2000s, went mainstream with Cookie Clicker in 2013, and then split in two directions: pure number-go-up machines, and hybrids that graft clicking onto tycoon, mining or RPG progression. Most modern browser clickers are hybrids.
How to actually play one
Ignore the temptation to click constantly. Early clicks exist to buy your first automatic producer. Once you have one, your job becomes arithmetic: compare how long an upgrade takes to pay for itself against how long you plan to keep playing. The best moment in any clicker is closing the tab, knowing the machine keeps running without you.

Frequently asked
Do clicker games need a download?
No. Everything on this page runs in the browser. Most are built in HTML5 or Unity WebGL and start in a couple of seconds.
Are clickers bad for your hands?
Only if you play them as pure clicking tests. The genre expects you to automate early — if you are still mashing a button after an hour, the game has not shown you its actual mechanics yet.
